State of the Cinema: March 18 to March 24

This week, the White House gets taken down for the first time this year, you can make an unexpected journey at home, your X-Box 360 get judgmental and A&E goes psycho.

Theatrical Releases:

Friday, March 22:
- Olympus Has Fallen- Stars: Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart. Director: Antoine Fuqua. Rating: R. Plot: After the White House becomes overrun by terrorist forces and the president is kidnapped, a disgraced former Secret Service agent enters the White House and attempts to rescue the President. Thoughts: Looks cool, will probably be bad. It just has that feel to it. Still, keep an eye out of this one.

- The Croods- Stars: Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone. Director: Kirk De Micco, Chris Sanders. Rating: PG. Plot: After their home cave is destroyed, a prehistoric family makes the trek to find a new home is a strange world. Thoughts: Early buzz says the movie is fairly good, though the trailers never really seemed all that interesting. Probably a good one for the kids in a very R-rated weekend.

- Spring Breakers- Stars: James Franco, Selena Gomez. Director: Harmony Korine. Rating: R. Plot: A group of college girls looking for a fun spring break weekend find themselves in over their heads after they get arrested for robbery and bailed out by a sleazy drug dealer. Thoughts: Again, early buzz says that it's either a masterpiece of a train wreck, so no help there. The trailers were extremely obnoxious though, so I'd stick away until the DVD arrives.

- Admission- Stars: Tina Fey, Paul Rudd. Director: Paul Weitz. Rating: PG-13. Plot: A college admission's officer discovers that a high school student heading to college may be her son that she gave up for adoption. Thoughts: Though the trailers weren't that funny, the pair of Fey and Rudd will probably bring some laughs. Keep an eye on it.

Home Video Releases:

Tuesday, March 19:
- The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey- Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen. Director: Peter Jackson. Rating: PG-13. Plot: In this prequel to The Lord of the Rings a young hobbit joins a group of dwarves in order to rescue their mountain home from an evil dragon. Thoughts: Fans already know who is going to pick up this film. I plan to review it. Available On: Blu-Ray/DVD.

- Zero Dark Thirty- Stars: Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke. Director: Kathryn Bigelow. Rating: R. Plot: The story of one woman who pursued leads on the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden until the raid on his compound. Thoughts: Don't think. Just buy. Trust me. 3rd best film of last year. Just sayin'. Available On: Blu-Ray/DVD.

Friday, March 22:
- Les Miserables- Stars: Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway. Director: Tom Hooper. Rating: PG-13. Plot: A 19th century man escapes from prison and attempts to build a better, more musical life for himself while evading the capture of a harsh policeman. Thoughts: Not really my cup of tea, but I will see it and I will review it. Available On: Blu-Ray/DVD.

- This is 40- Stars: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann. Director: Judd Apatow. Rating: R. Plot: Remember the married couple from Knocked Up? Yeah, Judd Apatow made a movie about them. Thoughts: I loved Knocked Up, but this film doesn't look all that good. Still, I'll probably check it out.

Video Game Releases:

Monday, March 18:
- Lego City Undercover- Platform: Wii U. Developer: TT Fusion. Publisher: Nintendo. Plot: Play as Chase McCain, a police officer in Lego City as he goes undercover to catch some of the cities biggest criminal. It's like GTA, but reversed. And for kids. Thoughts: Reviews are great and personally, if I had a Wii U (Which I do want, by the way), this game would be a definite buy.

Tuesday, March 19:
- Gears of War: Judgement- Platform: X360. Developer: Epic Games, People Can Fly. Publisher: Microsoft Studios. Plot: Play as Damon Baird and Cole Train in this prequel of the Gears of War series. Thoughts: Never been a big fan of Gears of War, so I probably won't be buying, but fans of the series probably won't be disappointed.

- The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct- Platforms: X360, PS3, Wii U, Win. Developer: Terminal Reality. Publisher: Activision. Plot: Play as Merle and Daryl Dixon in a game set before the show as you desperately attempt to make it to Atlanta, meeting other survivors along the way. Thoughts: A game based on a TV show is usually not a good thing, but The Walking Dead is rip for video gaming, so I'll probably check it out.

Television Premieres:

Monday, March 18:
- Bates Motel- Stars: Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga. Network: A&E. Time: Mondays at 10. Plot: In a prequel series to Psycho, Norman Bates's mother buys a motel in a small town in hope of giving her and her son a chance at a new life. Thoughts: I'll definitely check it out and maybe even review it, but TV prequels never work out all that well.

Tuesday, March 19:
- Splash- Stars: Greg Louganis, Drake Bell. Network: ABC. Time: Tuesdays at 8. Plot: Eleven "celebrities", including Drake Bell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Kendra Wilkinson compete to see who can, yes seriously, become the best professional diver. Thoughts: Remember all those fake celebrity reality shows on Drake and Josh? Yeah....

Trailers:
- Kick-Ass 2- http://www.traileraddict.com/trailer/kick-ass-2/red-band-trailer. So, yeah, Jim Carrey is amazing. Let me just get that out of the way. Over, a fantastic trailer for a fantastic looking movie. Cool new story, cool new characters and it looks like the film still has the sense of humor like the first one. Overall, I can't wait. Releases on August 16.
