Halloween 2011: "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" Review

Welcome to Day 2 of Halloween 2011! So after yesterday's Dreamworks review, I thought to myself, "Gee, those were fun, but they just weren't scary." So today, I'm going to review something scary that is synonymous with Halloween: a musical!
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is one of, if not the, most popular "midnight movies" (movie played at midnight) and is one of the long-played movies of all time. It's still in theater to this very day. But is it good? Let's find out.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) after their car breaks down and they are force to take shelter in the twisted home of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). The events that follow have their ups and downs but in the end, everything turns out good.
Let's say the good first. The cast is one of the best grouping I've have seen in a while. Richard O'Brian (as Riff-Raff) and Patricia Quinn (as Magenta) are good in their roles. In fact, most of the supporting cast is good. But the real star of the show is Curry. This is definitely one of, if not the, best role he's had. Funny, emotional, evil and a good singer to boot, Curry really knocks it out of the park. The cast's weakest links are Bostwick and Sarandon. I get that the point is for the two to be kinda bland next to these really outlandish characters, but Brad and Janet are the least memorable part of the movie.
Probably the most important part of any musical is, of course, the music. And thankfully, Rocky Horror's  music is some of the greatest from a musical. "Time Warp" is the one everyone remembers (and rightfully so) and is seen as the movie's signature song. "Hot Patootie" as sung by Meatloaf, is also a very fun song. If I had to pick a favorite though it would be Curry villainous "Sweet Transvestite". Funny and ominous at the same time, it was great. The weakest songs would probably be the ones toward the end, as they seem to run out of steam by then.
In fact, the entire movie seems to run out of steam as in reaches the end. The film's story is easily it's weakest part. It starts out fine, but it just gets too complicated at the end. The oddness of the film definately adds to the movie, but it gets to be too much, especially without much explaination about what going on. It's not like I need the movie to slap me in the face, but a little explaination wouldn't hurt. Also, some musical numbers do feel like they could have been cut without making much of a difference.
In the end, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a fun, entertaining movie with a great cast and great music. However, it weak plot dtracts from the film's enjoyablity. Overall, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is 5 out of 6. Now, if you'd excuse me, I have to go visit Camp Crystal Lake.
